چکیده

The coarsening kinetics of nanoscale, coherent Al3ð Sc1 xErxÞ precipitates in a-Al during aging of a supersaturated Al–0.06 Sc–0.02 Er (at.%) alloy at 300 C are studied using transmission electron microscopy and local-electrode atom-probe tomography. Erbium and Sc segregate at the precipitate core and shell, respectively. The matrix supersaturations of Er and Sc, as well as the mean precipitate radius and number density evolve in approximate agreement with coarsening models, allowing the determination of the matrix/precipitate interfacial free energy and solute diffusivities. At 300 C, the a-Al=Al3ðSc1 xErxÞ interfacial free energy due to Sc is about twice as large as for a-Al=Al3Sc. The diffusivity of Er in the ternary alloy is about three orders of magnitude smaller than that of Er in binary Al–0.045 at.% Er and about two orders of magnitude smaller than the diffusivity of Sc in binary Al–Sc. The measured Sc diffusivity is consistent with the literature values. 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Core–shell nanoscale precipitates in Al–0.06 at.% Sc microalloyed with Tb, Ho, Tm or Lu

The age-hardening response at 300 C of Al–0.06Sc–0.02RE (at.%, with RE = Tb, Ho, Tm or Lu) is found to be similar to that of binary Al–0.08Sc (at.%), except that a shorter incubation period for hardening is observed, which is associated with nanoscale RE-rich Al3(RE1 xScx) precipitates. In addition, Al–0.06Sc–0.02Tb (at.%) has a much lower peak microhardness than that of Al–0.08Sc (at.%) due to...

Effect of Pre-existing Nano Sized Precipitates on Microstructure and Mechanical Property of Al-0.2wt% Sc Highly Deformed by ARB Process

The effect of pre-existing nano sized precipitates on the mechanisms and rate of grain refinement has been investigated during the severe plastic deformation. A binary Al–0.2Sc alloy, containing coherent Al3Sc particles, of 3.62 nm in diameter has been deformed by accumulative roll bonding up to 10 cycles. The resulting deformed structures were quantitatively analyzed using electron backscatter...

Effect of NbMo Addition on the Precipitation Behaviour of V Microalloyed Steel during Intercritical Annealing

This paper reports on the precipitation behaviour and microstructural evolution in ~20% cold rolled NbMoV and V single microalloyed low carbon steels during intercritical annealing. The microstructure and precipitation behaviour were studied by optical and scanning/transmission electron microscopy and microanalysis, X-ray diffraction technique and Vickers hardness testing. After intercritical a...

THERMAL ANALYSIS AND KINETICS OF THE PRECIPITATION IN WROUGHT Al-Mg, Al-Mg-ScAND Al-Mg-Sc-Me (Me=Zr, Ti) ALLOYS

Precipitation behaviour of wrought Al-6Mg alloys with ternary scandium and quaternary zirconium and titanium has been studied. Hardness measurements and resistivity studies are employed to assess the precipitation behaviour of scandium doped Al-6Mg alloy without or with quaternary additions of zirconium and titanium. Further, the kinetics of precipitations are studied by differential scanning c...

Creep of Al-Sc Microalloys with Rare-Earth Element Additions

Cast and aged Al-Sc microalloys are creep-resistant to 300‰, due to the blocking of dislocations by nanosize, coherent Al3Sc (L12) precipitates. Rare-earth elements substitute for Sc in these precipitates, leading to a higher number density of smaller precipitates, which have a greater lattice-parameter mismatch with Al than in the Al-Sc binary microalloy. This leads to an improvement in both a...
